Workshops (2023/24)

Following on from the March 2023 graphic design workshop series, Gill worked with the HSDTC at KCL to revise the visual communication training for the Health Faculties, in conjunction with another trainer who provides online training in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator. Gill’s original workshops now form part of a visual communication training pathway (shown below), which was put into practice at the beginning of the 2023/24 academic year. As part of that pathway, Gill has created, and delivered, an additional practical workshop, focused on creating posters in MS PowerPoint.

Gill ran two series of her Graphic Design for Scientific Figures workshops for research students of KCL Health Faculties during the 2023/24 academic year. One series ran in late autumn 2023 and the second ran in early spring 2024. The in-person, practical workshops are repeated to allow more people to attend and are held at either the Waterloo or Denmark Hill campuses. Each series consists of the following workshops:

  • Workshop 1 – Good Graphic Design Practice for Scientific Visual Communication (HSDTC80). A 1.5 hour online presentation that covers the basics of good graphic design practice when creating figures, presentations, papers and posters. As the workshop is online, participant numbers are unlimited.
  • Workshop 2a – Creating Better Figures, Presentations and Posters in MS PowerPoint (HSDTC133). A 2 hour in-person, hands-on workshop that puts into practice the graphic design theory discussed during Workshop 1. As this is a practical workshop, with Gill providing 1-2-1 guidance, participant numbers are limited to a maximum of 12.
  • Workshop 2b – Creating Better Figures, Presentations and Posters in MS PowerPoint (HSDTC133). A repeat of Workshop 2a.
  • Workshop 3a – Creating Adaptable Figures Using Adobe Illustrator (HSDTC81). A 2-hour in-person, hands-on workshop that introduces a methodology for creating adaptable and editable figures using Adobe Illustrator and provides instruction in the basic functionality of the software via two hands-on exercises. As this is a practical workshop, with Gill providing 1-2-1 guidance, participant numbers are limited to a maximum of 12.
  • Workshop 3b – Creating Adaptable Figures Using Adobe Illustrator (HSDTC81). A repeat of Workshop 3a.
  • Workshop 3c – Creating Adaptable Figures Using Adobe Illustrator (HSDTC81). A repeat of Workshop 3a.

The KEATS webpage that accompanies these workshops has been completely revamped and revised to reflect the new visual communication training pathway. It has been designed to help participants choose the workshops that will be most relevant to their needs, as well as giving access to online training materials and videos. Also researchers at the King’s Health Faculties could apply (via the KEATS webpage) for a bursary to purchase the Adobe Creative Cloud suite of software packages. This includes Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop software, as well as InDesign, Acrobat and much more.

Staff and students of KCL Health Faculties can access the new KEATS webpage here.

Following on from the spring 2024 workshops, the whole visual communication training pathway was reviewed and slightly revised before the beginning of the next academic year. This revision included offering more online workshops in the use of Adobe design and illustration software. See the webpage dedicated to the 2024/25 workshops for more details.
